Living in a rural community comes with many rewards, but also unique challenges. One of the most critical is emergency response.

When a medical emergency strikes, every second counts. In rural areas, help can sometimes arrive too late. Morris Island First Response was created to bridge that gap and provide timely, local assistance while waiting for professional emergency services to arrive.

Taking Action in Our Community

To make that possible, we’ve organized a community volunteer team, purchased an AED, and committed to ongoing training and practice. These steps help us stay ready to respond and make a real difference when every minute matters.

We also work closely with our local emergency services to coordinate efforts and build a safer, more resilient community.

But we can’t do it alone. Real progress depends on the support of government officials and policy makers to better connect rural responders with professional services. By sharing our story, we hope to raise awareness, strengthen community trust, and inspire broader improvements in rural emergency response.

How You Can Help

1. Spread the word

Share information about Morris Island First Response with friends, family, and neighbors. Awareness builds support.

2. Get trained

If you live in a remote area, take a first aid or AED course. If training isn’t available locally, advocate for it to be offered.

3. Volunteer

Join or start a local emergency response group. Even basic first aid knowledge can save lives.

4. Advocate for change

Reach out to local representatives and explain why rural areas need better integration between emergency services and community responders.

The Bigger Picture

Our long-term goal is to have volunteer first responders integrated directly into emergency dispatch systems, so they can be notified the moment a 911 call comes in.

Right now, anyone in the Morris Island community who needs help must call emergency services and then contact our first response number. That’s a lot to ask of someone in crisis.

In an ideal scenario, both emergency services and the local first response team would be alerted at the same time, reducing response time and easing the burden on families during emergencies.

Standing Together for Rural Safety

The challenges of rural emergency response are real, but they’re not insurmountable. With the support of community members, local leaders, and policy makers, we can close the response time gap and ensure faster help for those who need it most.

Let’s stand together with Morris Island First Response and all rural volunteer teams who are proving that prepared communities save lives.
